Anthropometry, in which ostensibly objective measurements were applied to human physical diversity, was long used by scientists, colonial administrators, eugenicists, and engineers to advance racism, domination, and violence. In this talk, Ronn Daniel presents an overview of anthropometry and critiques its use in interior design.
Daniel is associate professor of interior design in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University, where he teaches history, theory, and design studios. Daniel’s scholarship investigates historic interiors within their social, cultural, ideological, and technological contexts. He is committed to building critical and interpretive frameworks that understand interior design as a vibrant mode of cultural practice.
